Regenerative Growing Solutions

A Living Ecosystem of Regeneration, Pollination & Nourishment

The Kingbridge Garden was created as a living experiment in regenerative growing, blending permaculture principles, ecological restoration, and culinary purpose into one evolving landscape.

The original raised beds were built using layered regenerative methods inspired by both permaculture and hügelkultur design. Each bed contains logs, branches, forest mycelium, organic matter, and soil working together as a living system beneath the surface. Over time, these layers naturally retain moisture, build healthy soil biology, store carbon, and nourish plant life from the ground up.

In its earliest years, the garden was dedicated primarily to pollinator support and soil regeneration. Medicinal flowers and native flowering species were planted to attract bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects while allowing the soil ecosystem to mature and strengthen naturally.

As the garden evolved, so did its purpose.

Today, the space serves as a hybrid chef garden supporting Kingbridge’s culinary team with fresh herbs, edible flowers, vegetables, and seasonal ingredients used throughout our menus. Annual crops are interwoven with perennial plants and pollinator wildflowers, creating a biodiverse ecosystem that supports both people and the surrounding environment.

What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is essentially the philosophy of living in alignment with nature’s systems rather than against them. It is an approach to land management and settlement design that adopts arrangements observed in flourishing natural ecosystems.

Innovative Practices for a Sustainable Future

The Kingbridge garden employs innovative techniques like Hugelkultur, where wood scraps and fallen trees, from the forest on the Property, are placed at the base of the beds. This method not only minimizes waste but also enhances the soil by slowly releasing moisture, nutrients, and carbon into the root zones of native plants, fostering their health and resilience year after year.

A Living Laboratory for Sustainability

The Kingbridge garden features 25 native plant and pollinator species, showcasing the importance of regenerative biodiversity in building resilient ecosystems. In addition to its ecological benefits, the garden functions as a living laboratory, for testing carbon storage and sequestration across varying planter bed designs. This work advances knowledge in sustainable land management practices and supports efforts to combat climate change.

From Garden to Plate

At The Kingbridge Centre, our Permaculture Garden plays a pivotal role in our culinary philosophy. We make the most of our fresh, seasonal herbs by carefully harvesting them in late fall, and preserving them through methods like drying, freezing, and infusing to ensure we have a year-round supply. This practice allows us to incorporate the vibrant flavours of our garden into our dishes, even during the winter months.
